Thank fuck it’s finally 2017. Jeez, 2016 just couldn’t end soon enough. Thankfully, there was some good anime and if I’m honest it’s looking like there’s some good anime again!
Between Yuri!!! on Ice, Flip Flappers and Hibike! Euphonium 2 the autumn 2016 season is a tough act to follow. All three of those series ended up amongst my absolute favourites of the year, there were more series that were also great, and to be honest I’m only optimistic about two upcoming series. Most everything I’m picking up is ‘fluff’ – series I’m not expecting to be great but might be fun and surprise me, assuming they’re good enough to warrant continuing beyond an episode or two. That doesn’t bode well, but hey – the two series I’m optimistic for look set to be great!
So here’s what I’m picking up:
- ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka
- Gabriel DropOut
- Kirakira☆Precure A La Mode
- Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon
- Kuzu no Honkai
- Little Witch Academia
- Minami Kamakura Koukou Joshi Jitensha-Bu
- Rewrite S2
- Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen
- Urara Meirochou
- Youjo Senki
- Yowamushi Pedal: NEW GENERATION
And, as always, my preliminary thoughts:
ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka doesn’t really reveal much in its premise – just some stuff about the setting and the main character’s position in it. Jean Otis is second-in-command of the inspection agency… but what they’re inspecting, I don’t know. It looks vaguely serious and potentially mature, and the promo art is certainly striking (if just a little bit Nazi-ish), so I think it warrants an inspection (see what I did there?). What else do you want me to say – you expect me to read the manga to find out more? Fuck that, I just look at a chart and go from there.
Chaos;Child is the next entry in the Semi;Colon meta-franchise, coming hot on the heels of Occultic;Nine, which had some major problems. At this point, I think I know what to expect: quirky, fun characters, a dark conspiracy, and copious pseudo-science. It won’t be as good as Steins;Gate, but it’ll probably be better than ChäoS;HEAd. GOD I hope it’s better than ChäoS;HEAd, that was actually infuriating.
The main character of Fuuka is described as “a bit shy, and he’s constantly glued to his smartphone so he can check Twitter”. It’s me! It’s an anime about me! And also every other worthless anime fun! It looks like it’s a love triangle series with a manic dream pixie girl character, and then they all play in a band or something. Might be nice enough, the music element in particular piques my interest.
Who wants cute girls doing cute things? Me. Bam, Gabriel DropOut. It’s about an angel who goes to an earth school in pursuit of knowledge but gets addicted to web games and stops doing anything. If she’s as much useless garbage as the premise makes her out to be I’m going to enjoy this! Animated by Dogakobo to boot!
Kirakira☆Precure A La Mode may not be on the chart but it’s airing in February. It’s new Precure! Of course I’m watching it! It also looks exceptionally cute and cool and good and I am excited!
Heeeeere’s KyoAni! Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon is actually the only series I’ve watched a PV for, mostly because it ended up on my twitter timeline. It looks set to be kinda trashy, fanservicey stuff, but hopefully not as bad as Phantom World. It’s about a dragon who becomes a live-in maid to a female office worker. That the main character is adult and female is novel enough by itself, bizarrely, so who knows – maybe this will surprise me.
Kuzu no Honkai promises romance between two beautiful perfect people, but they’ve got a shocking secret! I wonder what… I guess that’s the point of the premise – to hook you in to the mystery. Ah well, I’ll give it a shot. Might be a nice, lightly melodramatic (or surprisingly sweet) romance.
And the first of the two shows I’m actually excited for: Little Witch Academia! Yes, it’s getting a full TV series! The original Anime Mirai OVA was delightful, and the Kickstarter OVA shows that the setting has the legs to support something a bit bigger. And even in the worst case, it’s still more anime witches. This is very important.
Wait, didn’t I already drop Long Riders!? Oh wait, Minami Kamakura Koukou Joshi Jitensha-Bu is another series about cute girls riding bikes. This looks like it might be more sports focused – a female Yowamushi Pedal, perhaps? Eh, I’ll give it a chance.
Onihei is based on a historical novel series set in the Edo period. It’s about a dude who enacts justice on wrongdoers. That’s as much as I have to go on. But! Serious, mature and historical series I think warrant a chance, because when they’re good they are great.
Hahaha, fucking Rewrite. Easily the best so-bad-it’s-good series I watched last year – possibly the only one, because any potential others either didn’t get picked up or I dropped like a rock. Rewrite had the right amount of some genuinely good elements (a few characters and some humour for the most part) and a shitton of utterly absurd and ridiculous ones. It was weird and dumb as shit and it was great fun as a result. Can’t fucking wait!
Seiren is another romcom, interestingly depicting the main character’s three different stories – one for each girl. I presume three distinct stories that aren’t meant to be in the same continuity, or something like that. Original story too, which is nice! The focus in the premise on words like “honest” and “pure” have me side-eyeing it a bit, but again, I’ll give it a shot.
And the second series I’m genuinely excited for: Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen. The first season was incredible. It, however, barely touched on the present-day story, focusing instead on Yakumo’s memories of his youth; this should hopefully give us Yotarou’s story. I am very excited!
Urara Meirochou. Cute girls doing cute things. Got some spiritual/supernatural elements. Heck yeah.
Youjo Senki has me very cautious. It’s based on a light novel. It’s got anime bullshit to have a loli frontline warrior. The premise implies imperialist/fascist sympathy (even if unintentional). But: the promotional art is striking. It does not look like your typical trashy light novel adaptation, potentially being vicious, so I want to see how it turns out, just in case it’s actually good.
Yowamushi Pedal: NEW GENERATION. It’s more Yowamushi Pedal. I like Yowamushi Pedal. I’ll probably like this! I still haven’t seen the movie. Maybe I’ll watch that.
And that’s your lot! If we include March Comes in Like a Lion and the last few episodes of Mahoutsukai Precure! I’ve got 18 series, so 16 new pickups. Most of those pickups will likely not survive for too long, but at least they’ll get a chance
Here’s to 2017!
