Archive for the ‘Winter 2012’ Category

So it has certainly been another year in which anime was made and released. And in grand tradition of everyone everywhere who writes about their hobby in which things are released during the year, I have got lists and stuff! And some discussion on some other things that were notable about the year. A pretty standard retrospective, really.

A small note about the lists – any multi-cours series that ended in 2012 (i.e began in 2011) qualifies for the lists about the year, but any multi-cours series that continues into 2013 only qualify for lists about the season they started in, with only what has been seen so far being used to judge it. Similarly, a series that had multiple seaons this year will be grouped into its franchise for the lists about the year, but will be considered separately for the season lists. It’ll make more sense when you see the lists.

Read the title of this series. Read it. That nearly tells you everything you need to know about how I felt prior to it starting. But if you think that tells you everything then you obviously haven’t heard the premise:

A space pirate captain who is also a high school girl.

Well, this should be entertaining!

It’s time for some piracy!

Been a surprisingly busy week for me, don’t know how I was able to watch everything! Nothing much to really say, aside from the MASSIVE shock that a single cour of the noitaminAs is more than 11 episodes this season! Has that ever happened before??

As the season is drawing to a close, the various plots reach their climax and are inevitably setting up for the big reveal or last great moment of catharsis. Or they’re just continuing as usual because they’re about high-school girls and therefore don’t really have any plot to speak of.

Also worth mentioning is that, due to football, a bunch of series didn’t air this week. Some of which I don’t really mind all that much, but the biggest loss of all this is no Acchi Kocchi! The greater question raised is: what’s going on in the Japanese football world that’s so great as to replace anime? As far as I’m aware the only major football thing at the moment is the Euro cup, and the last time I checked Japan is not in Europe. Don’t hold me to that though, my geography ain’t that great. Maybe they care about the sport enough in general that any major tournament, no matter whether they’re involved or not, takes priority on TV. Or maybe they have their own thing going on at the same time. I don’t know, I don’t ‘do’ football.

I caught up! It took me basically the entire week, what with all those distractions and responsibilities. So I’ve got like 4 weeks of episodes to discuss right now. Fun!

Because processr has gone on hiatus due to exams and we go to the same university, I expect you’re expecting me to do so as well, right? WRONG. See, I don’t suck, therefore you’re going to get this worthless weekly commentary no matter what. Priorities, innit.

…I should seriously be studying for my AI exam right now.

A lot of good episodes this week – many series that were disappointing last week had much better ones this week. Alas, with everything being 2-3 episodes in, the animation quality is starting to take a hit. Although that may just be Hyouka making everything else look like trash.

Mirai Nikki

When Mirai Nikki was announced it came with a flurry of hype. An adaption of a very popular shounen psychological thriller manga series which gave us the yanderest yandere who ever yandered, there was a lot of excitement and anticipation surrounding it. I didn’t know anything about the series, but was still quite excited; the premise sounded incredibly intriguing: 12 individuals are given ‘diaries’ which tell them the future, albeit with restrictions depending on the person, and are told by the god Deus (see what they did there?) that the last one alive out of the 12 of them will become his successor – will become God.  Not a bad setup by any measure.

There were however a few rumblings of discontent after the initial announcement and in the early episodes. A fair number of people who had read the manga warned that the story gets worse and kinda ridiculous. But given the strength of the first few episodes, how true could this be? Nothing more than a minority opinion from those who didn’t enjoy it? Or perhaps they knew what was up, and simply giving the rest of us advance notice?

Even the characters were spoiling the plot for themselves!
