Summer was pretty great. New Game!!, Princess Principal, Symphogear AXZ, Kakegurui and the masterpiece that is Made in Abyss – there was a LOT of great stuff, and that’s not even including My Hero Academia or Kirakira Precure continuing. Autumn’s looking pretty solid too – I’m picking up a bunch, that’s for sure.

Speaking of ‘being excited for things happening at the moment’, card games! Legend of the Five Rings releases soon and I’m damn excited for it (not even just because I’m an irredeemable weeb!) and between rotation, the revised core set and the banned & restricted list Netrunner is looking a completely new game! It’s a great time to be a fan of LCGs, that’s for sure.

OK, I lied.

I said winter season reviews would come out, and then they didn’t. I would say blame Persona 5 (a perfectly valid target) but there’s more to it than that.

I simply don’t have the time, energy and enthusiasm for the long-form reviews that I used to. And I worry they’re getting formulaic or whatnot. So for spring, I’m going to be trying something slightly different: I’ll be creating posts collating 3 or 4 (depending on season size and how much there is to say) concise reviews in them, instead of the detailed analyses I have been doing. Because I do still want to share my thoughts on feelings on what I’ve watched, but not 1500+ words worth at a time. Hopefully the reviews will come out more focused and to the point too!

So we’ll see how that goes. In the meantime, here’s what I’ll be picking up for the summer, which has actually already started even if I haven’t watched anything yet!

So I am working on reviews from last season, but it’s very on-off, not helped by varying distractions (Dark Souls 3 DLC, card games, Persona 5 soon enough, etc.). It was a good season though! Rakugo S2, Gabriel DropOut, Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, the end of 3-gatsu no Lion (S2 hype!), and the starts of Little Witch Academia and KiraKira Precure A La Mode!

This season has actually already started, so I’m a bit late to the party on this (it snuck on me – technically speaking, the winter season hasn’t finished yet!), but aside from the first episodes of arguably the 2 biggest shows of the season there’s nothing much to talk about. Something tells me that this will be a season with few real surprises, mostly because the most anticipated shows are sequels and thus represent a somewhat known quantity.

And on that note, here’s what I’m picking up:

Thank fuck it’s finally 2017. Jeez, 2016 just couldn’t end soon enough. Thankfully, there was some good anime and if I’m honest it’s looking like there’s some good anime again!

Between Yuri!!! on Ice, Flip Flappers and Hibike! Euphonium 2 the autumn 2016 season is a tough act to follow. All three of those series ended up amongst my absolute favourites of the year, there were more series that were also great, and to be honest I’m only optimistic about two upcoming series. Most everything I’m picking up is ‘fluff’ – series I’m not expecting to be great but might be fun and surprise me, assuming they’re good enough to warrant continuing beyond an episode or two. That doesn’t bode well, but hey – the two series I’m optimistic for look set to be great!

You know what – the summer season this year was low-key a really good season. Sure, I dropped a fair bit, but everything that aired really did leave a strong impression on me. It was never a drag, I was excited to watch every new episode, it was just great.

But, ah, it’s over, and once again we cast our eyes forward to the 3 months that unfolds before us… or has already started unfolding, because this is a couple of days late to the start of the season. I was busy! I often am. I was busy not only with writing reviews (god damn I managed to stay on top of everything this time!) but with Netrunner! Netrunner is a good, deep, complex cyberpunk asymmetrical expandable/living card game and you should play it if you like card games or if you are curious about card games. I’ve gotten really into it. It’s good!

Oh yeah, cartoons or something.

Spring has ended and I guess it sort of delivered! A lot of shows that were fine-to-good, a couple of stand outs (My Hero Academia stunned me and Kiznaiver was so much my kind of thing it was spooky), more JoJo’s, and the few brave shows that dared to be garbage. Above average season if you ask me.

Summer has already started and I’ll tell you what, there sure are some anime airing. There’s only one series I’m actually pre-emptively excited for, however. There’s stuff that looks interesting. There’s stuff that I’ve heard with great manga. But there’s very little there for which I have any reason to be excited for yet.

thank you anichart.net

Now this is what I call timely! Putting up my plans when the season has already started (and I have already started watching things) is… not the best. But frankly, who cares, it doesn’t even matter.

Last time I said the winter season was looking excellent and, in retrospect, it wasn’t bad. I did pick up a lot, but did also end up dropping a fair bit, and the things I continued were mostly pretty unexceptional. The only stand outs from the season ended up being Boku dake ga Inai Machi, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and Mahoutsukai Precure! (which is absolutely darling and you should go watch it) – still better than the last autumn season!

This season, well, I don’t know if it’s looking good but it’s certainly looking packed. There are a ton of series that I could justify checking out, to the point that I’m actually being picky! Which is very unusual!

Either way, here’s what I’m picking up:

  • Big Order
  • Boku no Hero Academia
  • Bungou Stray Dogs
  • Endride
  • flying witch
  • Hai Furi
  • JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
  • Joker Game
  • Kiznaiver

  • Sansha Sanyou

  • Unhappy♪

And as always, wot I think about them:

Thank fuck that autumn season is over. I ended up keeping with a grand total of 5 shows, and only 3 of them could be considered particularly great. I think that’s the lowest number I’ve been watching since my very first season. Admittedly, Owarimonogatari and of course One Punch Man meant it wasn’t a season without notability, but there really wasn’t anything else worth mentioning.

The upcoming winter season is looking to be VERY different. I’m picking up a large number of shows again and it feels pretty good I have to say. Of course they don’t all look amazing, but by setting low enough expectations at least a handful should be pleasantly surprising! And there aren’t even that many sequels, which is always fun to see.

Here’s what I’ll be picking up:

  • Ajin
  • Boku Dake ga Inai Machi
  • Bubuki Buranki
  • Dagashi Kashi
  • Dimension W
  • Durarara!!x2 Ketsu
  • Haruchika: Haruta to Chika wa Seishun Suru
  • Luck & Logic
  • Mahou Tsukai Precure!
  • Musaigen no Phantom World
  • Prince of Stride: Alternative
  • Reikenzan: Hoshikuzu-tachi no Utage
  • Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

And as always, some thoughts.

What the hell happened to the old rule of thumb? That the equinox seasons (Spring and Autumn) were better for anime than the solstice seasons? Because man was the summer great this year! Gatchaman Crowds Insight, Non Non Biyori Repeat, Symphogear GX, Working!!!, Ore Monogatari!!, and so many others. I didn’t drop a single damn thing, and I picked up a fair bit, including a couple of wildcards. The only bad show I watched was Charlotte, and that was looking great until loldrugs. I’ll admit – there weren’t any blockbusters. Fan favourites and cult classics, sure! But nothing even remotely game-changing. But it was still such a fun season.

I think the green, yellow and red colours are indicative of something, but what??

The green, yellow and red colours are indicative of something??

By contrast, jeez this autumn season is slim goddamn pickings. I think they’ve adapted the same light novel three times under slightly different names (y’know, the one about the magical high school and the male protag getting a harem). There’s a TON of sequels and spin-offs, but if you haven’t watched the originals your SOL. Most everything else is just kind of uninspiring? For the most part.

Still, I’ve got some things to pick up, so let’s have a look.

  • Comet Lucifer
  • Concrete Revolutio
  • Garo: Guren no Tsuki
  • One Punch Man
  • Owarimonogatari
  • Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru
  • Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider
  • Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen
  • Young Black Jack
  • Yuru Yuri S3

Huh, that’s a few more than I thought.

Spring was a touch weak, wasn’t it? Sure, there was a handful of truly great shows (Hibike! Euphonium, Hello!! Kiniro Mosaic, Kekkai Sensen, Ore Monogatari!!, the end of Stardust Crusaders) but that was barely anything else. I was watching fewer shows than I have in a LONG time. At least Bloodborne was great.

Green = sequel, Orange = not sequel, Red = neither

Green = sequel, Orange = not sequel, Red = neither

But let’s look forward, and goddamn Summer’s looking good. And, uh, has technically already started. I’m a bit late on this. But there’s a lot to be excited about, and not just because of all the sequels to shows I love. And Funimation aren’t even licensing anything I particularly care about! Oh, I am feeling so good about this season already!

Anyway, enough beating around the bush – here’s what I’m picking up.

  • Chaos Dragon
  • Charlotte
  • Classroom Crisis
  • Durarara!!x2 Ten
  • Gakkou Gurashi!
  • Gangsta.
  • Gatchaman Crowds insight
  • Non Non Biyori Repeat
  • Senki Zesshou Symphogear GX
  • Working!!!

Low effort discussion ahead:
