It’s Anime Secret Santa time again! This is the fifth year I’ve participated in the Reverse Thieves organised project, and it’s always a blast. I get to anonymously recommend three shows to someone, and likewise receive three anonymous recommendations, with the only string attached being that I have to watch at least one and have to write a post about it.

This year, in part thanks to receiving two movie recommendations (oh my god THANK YOU Santa!), I watched all of them! And thus have reviews for all of them as well! What recommendations did I receive? Well…

  • Adolescence of Utena
  • Colorful
  • Beck

A pretty exciting selection all around if you ask me. I had extremely vague plans to watch Colorful and Beck at some point, so this way I’m actually getting around to them which I’m really grateful for, and Adolescence of Utena is a film I didn’t plan on watching but was excited to see regardless because it’s related to the masterpiece that is Revolutionary Girl Utena, a series I loved (and incidentally received as a “not an official recommendation but you should watch it anyway” recommendation for Secret Santa back in 2014!). None of these necessarily came out of left field, but at the same time I wasn’t entering any of them with trepidation – so right off the bat it was a pretty great set of selections.

So let’s get on with the reviews!

Once again it’s time for probably my favourite time of the year (at least as far as aniblogging goes) – Anime Secret Santa! Organised by Reverse Thieves, I participated the last three years and got introduced to a bunch of good series. How it works is that we each make three anonymous recommendations for another participant, and we each receive three in turn. We then have to watch at least one, write a review about it, and they all get posted on Christmas Eve. Fun!

This year, weeb Santa left me xxxHOLiC, Seirei no Moribito and Last Exile under the tree. Not a bad spread, I thought, when I got the recommendations in. xxxHOLiC and Last Exile I had both heard of (unsurprisingly, as neither are hugely obscure) and definitely had loose plans to watch at some point. Seirei no Moribito, on the other hand, I had heard about but it was years ago and in the context of recommending obscure series, and I’d forgotten all about. I was definitely excited to check them all out, although them all being 2 cours did give me some slight pause… somehow, I managed to watch them all!

Merry Christmas!

It’s Anime Secret Santa time again! As with the last two years, I’m participating in Reverse Thieves’ project where we get to make three anonymous recommendations for another aniblogger, and receive 3 from someone else in turn. We then have to watch at least one and do a write-up about it. Last year, thanks to University coursework, I only had the time to watch one series, but having graduated I’ve been able to watch all three this time!

Those three? Roujin Z, Crest of the Stars, and Gankutsuou. My first impressions were that it was not a bad clutch of shows, and I had heard of all of them (even if only in passing). Amusingly enough, Gankutsuou was one of the series I got recommended last year but didn’t get around to watching – and even back then I already had it downloaded, fully intending to watch it! Very convenient!

Oh yeah, when I got my recommendations, my Santa also gave me a bonus, non-binding-because-of-length one: Revolutionary Girl Utena. Don’t worry Santa; I have it downloaded and WILL watch it at some point in the near future!

As with last year, I took part in Reverse Thieves’ Anime Secret Santa project this Christmas! If you don’t already know, it’s when a bunch of anibloggers secretly gift each other three anime recommendations (obviously with the ‘Santa’ kept secret), with the stipulation that recipients have to watch at least one of them and post up a review.

Last year worked out pretty well for me, as I ended up enjoying two out of the three gifted to me a great deal. This year I received Michiko to Hatchin, Gankutsuou and HeatGuy J. I actually already had Gankutsuou downloaded with plans to watch at some point, and had heard of Michiko to Hatchin already (having passed it up for some reason or another when I was indirectly recommended it a couple of years back), but HeatGuy J was a complete mystery to me. A pretty good spread of familiarity if you ask me, and ideal considering I was going to be watching all three of them, much like last year.

Unfortunately, real life had other plans, and I straight up did not have the time to watch more than one of them. Now that I’m in my final year the uni work got quite heavy, and I was also rocking a pretty bad Dark Souls addiction. Still, I was able to watch one of them, at least fulfilling my obligations! So I’d like to offer an apology to my Santa – I wanted to watch all three of them, I really did! And I’ll get round to them at some point – I have all three downloaded. But maybe giving me three 2-cours series was not a great idea?

In the end I decided to go with Michiko to Hatchin, partially because it wasn’t already on my backlog, partially because the premise sounded pretty cool, partially because it was only 22 episodes, and partially because it was the only available in 720p.

Anime Secret Santa is apparently a proud yearly tradition of the aniblogging community, wherein anibloggers suggest (in secret) 3 anime series for another aniblogger to watch, and then there’s some blogging. This was my first time participating (given that I only started blogging this year) and it was pretty fun overall! I had suggested to me Natsume Yuujinchou, Kure-nai and Paradise Kiss, and the reviews for each follow after the cut:
