It has been well established by now that I am a) a KyoAni fanboy and b) a sucker for cute anime romances.

Chuunbyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren was fucking catnip for me.

I loved the first season, and a second season where the focus is on Yuuta and Rikka developing as a couple? It was so damn close to being exactly what I wanted out of a KyoAni romance.

To wit, episode 6. Yuuta and Rikka’s class have gone on an overnight field trip, and at the end of the day ~shenanigans~ ensued and the two of them are messing about with some others after lights out and then they have to concoct a scheme to get Rikka back to her room without getting caught, and then:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh

A kiss on the cheek.

Nothing more than a quick, innocent kiss on the cheek.

That’s it.

I sat there grinning, blushing, squealing and giggling like an idiot for about an hour, with aftershocks lasting the following day or so.

I’m almost embarrassed that it affected me so much, but not really because it made me so happy. That was the first time either of them had done something like that! They could barely hold hands only a few episodes ago! They’re becoming more comfortable expressing their love for each other and that’s just the most adorable thing and they’re such a cute couple and oh my goodness!!

There’s cute, and then there’s fucking lethal. Nothing has turned me into a gibbering mess like that before, but I’m so glad that it did.

I know I get super invested in qt anime couples, but this was almost silly.

I love it so much.

Despite the weak final episode and getting a little over-dramatic towards the end, I enjoyed Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! quite a lot back when it aired (and on a subsequent rewatch), and so was rather excited at the news of a sequel. But then I’m a KyoAni fanboy; I get excited for anything they do.

I was a little apprehensive, however. While the first season didn’t end in a definitive, “this is all there is to the story and taking it any further would make no sense whatsoever” way (it’s a fucking slice-of-life rom-com, of course it wouldn’t end like that), it did make for a fairly rounded, complete package. In other words, there was never any need for a sequel and there wasn’t really anything left at the end that would provide a springboard for one. But it was clear from the promotional materials how they were going to go about it: throw in a new character to shake up the relationship between Yuuta and Rikka and watch the sparks fly. It’s a pretty standard, relatively uninspired route to take, but could be perfectly serviceable. That the new girl was going to be a friend of Yuuta’s from middle-school who also still suffers from chuunibyou did make it all a bit more promising, it must be said.

Should I just say that this series was made by Kyoto Animation and end the review here? I’ve mentioned this in earlier posts, but I’m a pretty big KyoAni fan. I won’t go into the details of why exactly, but basically I’ve enjoyed everything they’ve made. I love the feel they give their series, and they’re nearly always a ton of fun to watch. The amazingly high production values and impossibly cute girls certainly help things as well. But I think it’s safe to say that somewhere during the run for Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! I stopped being a mere fan, and have become something of a fanboy. For better or for worse.

So what is Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!? Well, it starts with our protagonist, Yuuta, as he begins high school. He purposefully chose a relatively far-flung school to minimise the chances that anyone who knew him from middle school would be there. But why? Well, he was afflicted by the dreaded ‘chuunibyou’, which roughly translated is ‘eighth-grader syndrome’ – a condition where young adolescents have delusions of power and magic, believing themselves (or at least acting this way in a misguided attempt for attention) to be special and what have you. Basically, they think they’re the protagonist in some crappy shounen action anime. Well, Yuuta outgrew this towards the end of his middle school life, but the first impression he gave entrenched him as a weird loner. This way it’s a fresh start for him and, more importantly, there’s no-one there to remind him of his ungodly embarrassing past as the Dark Flame Master.

But he ends up meeting and being in the same class as Rikka, a girl still caught in the throes of self-unaware chuunibyou.

Cue cute girls, hilarity, romance and some unbelievably fun animation courtesy of KyoAni.

So this should have been done a day or two ago but whatever, I was busy. Everything’s coming to an end though, and the next season ain’t that promising. A shame, I guess. Oh, and a bunch of subs were delayed.

Maybe it’s because it’s nearing the end of the season, maybe it’s because I have lots of course work to do, or maybe it’s because each week I don’t really have anything useful or interesting to say, but these posts are beginning to get pretty tedious to write. I’ll see it through until the end of the season, but who knows what after then, really.
