Hahahahaha, 2016, oh wow. It sure has been a year! While it’s been crappy to exist in, it’s been pretty alright for escapist media! And from my perspective, there’s been a lot of good anime – enough that cutting down to 10 was actually difficult.

As always, I’m counting ‘2016 anime’ as series that ended in a 2016 season and films that I first had the opportunity to watch in 2016. So if it started in the autumn season of 2015 but finished at the end of the winter 2016 season, that would count; if it started in the autumn season of 2016 but won’t finish until the end of the 2017 winter season, it won’t. For split cours, I just go with my gut. In short, unless I’ve been able to put a score on it I won’t be considering it – prematurely enshrining how great something is when it isn’t even half over is a bad idea!

So with that out of the way, onto my top 10 anime of 2016! Ah, but first, a few series that didn’t quite make the cut…

Did you have a good year? I hope so. My 2015 was alright. Pretty unremarkable, a couple of new experiences, but mostly just been working. But for anime though, it’s been interesting I guess. I wouldn’t call 2015 a bad year for anime by any stretch, but thinking back on what I watched while writing this top 10 I was struck by how few series really left a major impact in the fandom, and more importantly how few left much of an impression on me. I think I’d overall characterise it as a solid, if unassuming, year for anime. Still, there’ve been at least a few that I’ll be remembering for a while, and enough that I wasn’t struggling for things to include!

Now, the definition I’m working with for ‘2015 anime’ is pretty broad, but a lot of other people are using it too so it’s nothing too radical or unexpected. It’s what I’ve been using for previous years: a series counts if it finished in 2015, and a film counts if it was first available for me to watch this year. I feel this is pretty sensible – you can’t exactly consider a show “best of the year” if it hasn’t even finished yet, shows that started last year wouldn’t get a chance otherwise, and expecting me to consider a film that I could’ve only watched in a cinema in Japan is just silly.

Before we get to the top 10, I want to talk about some anime that didn’t quite make the cut, but definitely deserve a shoutout.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders was a pretty wild time. 48 episodes of a bunch of muscles punching shit in Egypt with the aim of punching one bunch of muscles (who is a vampire) in particular. Good fun!

Quite a few have commented on the fact that the villainous-muscle-of-the-week format hurt it to some extent – when you compare it with Battle Tendency, there was not anywhere near as much of a sense of escalating conflict and tension and excitement, as individual fights rarely meant anything in the grand scheme of things. So going into the final episode and the conclusion of the centuries long conflict between Dio and the Joestars I wasn’t feeling quite as excited as I felt I should.

Until the OP.

First it adds sound effects to match the animation, already lending it a gravitas suitable for the final episode, but that simply put a smile on my face, because they had done this before in the previous seasons.

Don't you just want to punch that smug, dog-killing bastard?

Don’t you just want to punch that smug, dog-killing bastard?

Then you hear Dio’s “Za Warudo!”. The music cuts out. Jotaro is frozen in place. Dio steps up, smirking, circling Jotaro. And then time starts again.

That is how you create hype.

Goddamn I can’t wait for Diamond is Unbreakable.

There are many reasons why JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was absurdly incredible; the dubstep squirrel scene basically embodies every single goddamn one of them.

The crazy over-masculinization, the insane amount of intensity, drama and weight given to every little thing, the ludicrous and fuck-awesome soundtrack, the glorious stylization, Nazis, cyborg Nazis, and the act of taking something incredibly innocuous, goofy or dumb and making it an actual credible power – this scene had it all.

To be honest it, was a close call between choosing this or JoJo sending Cars into space using a fucking volcano. Either way, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was a thing that actually happened that had many unforgettable moments that also actually happened and we are all the better for it.

So this should have been done a day or two ago but whatever, I was busy. Everything’s coming to an end though, and the next season ain’t that promising. A shame, I guess. Oh, and a bunch of subs were delayed.

Merry JoJomas!

Maybe it’s because it’s nearing the end of the season, maybe it’s because I have lots of course work to do, or maybe it’s because each week I don’t really have anything useful or interesting to say, but these posts are beginning to get pretty tedious to write. I’ll see it through until the end of the season, but who knows what after then, really.

Loveliness and hugs abound this week

yay hugs and stuff
