2014! It’s been quite the year for me, pretty much entirely because I graduated university. I’m like, an adult or something now, it’s horrifying, but it hasn’t stopped me watched my foreign children’s cartoons!

And it’s not been a bad year for anime. Masaaki Yuasa and Shinichiro Watanabe directing TV series, the start of the most popular part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Mushishi returning after 9 years without the slightest dip in quality, there’s been some pretty notable stuff going on. I can’t say there were any major surprises or new franchises that I feel are going to stand out as classics beyond Kill la Kill and Space Dandy, and the latter is chiefly because of how hard it was pushed on western audiences (not a knock on its quality, of course), but there were still a good clutch of series and films that I enjoyed greatly.

Before I indulge in a stunning display of originality and discuss my top 10 anime of the year, a quick reminder: a series counts as being from 2014 if it ended this year, even if it’s a long runner. Split cours – a single series that has seasonal gaps between chunks of the series – count as whatever year the last cours ended in (hence the exclusion of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, because it technically hasn’t finished yet). Neither of these are strict, but it’s a good enough guide. The edge cases don’t matter because they were never going to be on the list.

With that out of the way, here’s my top 10 anime of 2014!

Happy new year!

Phi Brain S3

00

Phi Brain, the premier puzzle-solving anime, somehow got a second season. And it was good. And then it somehow got a third season. Which is this. How? Why?!

Who cares, Phi Brain is fucking excellent. I’ve reviewed both previous seasons of it, and once it got over the uncertainty at the start of the first season it was able to consistently deliver its trademark mix of goofy seriousness and wonderful characters all within a world where puzzles are consistently the most serious fucking thing ever. It’s always been an utterly moronic premise but damn if the execution hasn’t been spectacular.

And now we have a third season of it. What’s new this time around? Well, where the first season involved Kaito puzzle-fighting against an evil group led by a white-haired pretty boy and the second season involved Kaito puzzle-fighting against an evil group led by a white-haired pretty boy, this third season involves… Kaito puzzle fighting against an evil group led by a pink-haired pretty girl!!

A girl! A competent and antagonistic one! In Phi Brain! My whole word has been turned upside-down!

It's puzzle time! ...for the last time ;_;

WOOOB WOBWOBWOBWOB WOB WOB

WOOOB WOBWOBWOBWOB WOB WOB

I burst out laughing as soon as I saw it in the first episode. I fucking love this show so goddamn much, and this shows just how absurd and amazing it all is and is somehow amazingly perfectly representative of the Phi Brain experience.

The only reason I chose this instead of the hilariously cheesy ED sung awfully by the cast is because this came sooner.

PUZZLE DOG

PUZZLE DOG

A dog with an evil, magical, mind-warping collar does puzzles. Possibly the most endearingly goofy moment from this year. Phi Brain at its Phi Brain-est. Gotta love it.

Although the actual moment goes not to the episode where the puzzle dog featured, but rather to the next episode preview from the prior one. Having just that single shot of the dog, knowing that’s what’s going to be in the next episode, and knowing nothing else about its role, it just made it so much funnier.

Phi Brain S2

Ah, Phi Brain. The premiere anime for shounen puzzle solving and yaoi shipping. I love that ridiculous show – my review of the first season speaks volumes – so imagine my delight when a second season was announced! For who could get enough of Kaito bullshitting his way through absurd contraptions with MAGIC while everyone hungered for his dick? Of course, he had eyes for none other than the Sudoku in front of him, but such was the complex state of relationships in the first series!

No, the initial 25 episodes were not enough. What satisfaction was there to be had? Sure, Rook and Kaito went on a date, but what happened after? The character development had only just started! The personalities and past had barely been plunged! Yes, another 25 episodes were desperately needed. Thank kamisama for NHK-E and the Japanese public’s glorious tax dollars, because without them we would not be here with Phi Brain S2.

There is actually, seriously, sincerely no trace of sarcasm in anything I just said.

Let’s review up!

Late again. I’d say it was strategic to fit in 3 finales, but no yeah I forgot about this again.

In other news (well not really), Phi Brain is getting a third season. Yes this made me unbelievably happy.
