I mentioned Samurai Flamenco last year around this time, because the Guillotine Gorilla reveal was the biggest “what the actual fuck” scene of 2013.

That moment fucking pales in comparison to what followed.

I didn’t exactly give Samurai Flamenco a glowing review, but that wasn’t because I actively disliked it or anything. It’s because I had no idea what to even feel about it – it got so absurd that I could barely process what was ever going on. It seemed to know what it wanted to do, but I think that it was the only one. In retrospect, we should have seen something like this coming considering it set out to homage just about every type of tokusatsu in the space of 22 episodes and somehow make it work as a single narrative, but even if we did there’s no way we could have predicted what actually happened.

Samurai Flamenco

Oh, noitaminA. Your autumn 2013 lineup was looking so good, what with Galilei Donna and this, Samurai Flamenco, two original series with premises that were unique enough to really feel at home on the timeslot… or rather, at home with how it was a few years ago, before it all went to shit. It felt like it could well be a return to form, and a certain level of cautious excitement swept over all of us. The caution was rather justified by Galilei Donna turning out to be utter crap though, but what about Samurai Flamenco?

Samurai Flamenco tells the story of a young model who yearns for more meaning in his life, which he tries to attain through mimicking the hero shows of his youth as a vigilante, and his slightly-older policeman friend in a long-distance relationship who also grew up on the likes of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai but took that inclination towards justice in a more legitimate manner. Together, they fight crime.

Shocking, I know.

Just as a heads up: this review will be spoileriffic as all hell. Due to the nature of the show and the criticisms I have with it, it is impossible to critique it without discussing a lot of plot twists and outcomes.

Samurai Flamenco was quite the pleasant surprise when it started airing. The story of a young model that had nothing going for him aside for his looks, and yet aspired to be a superhero like in the tokusatsu series he was obsessed with. Well, he also had his incredibly strong sense of justice and amazing perseverance in the face of, uh, being beat up by middle-schoolers. It was an interesting take on the superhero genre, having someone who is just an ordinary man wanting to do some good in the world through anonymous vigilantism, because it examined the expectations and limitations of his capabilities, and the way the public would actually likely react to such an individual.

The inclusion of the 20-something policeman Gotou added a lot in this regard, as being (at least at first) the only person who knew that Masayoshi was doing the whole Samurai Flamenco thing. The two of them bonded over a shared enjoyment of old tokusatsu series, and the contrast between the two – how they both believed in justice and wanted to fight for it, but just took different approaches – made for an interesting dynamic. It also allowed us to see how the police would react to a vigilante, at first condemning but eventually embracing him for PR reasons once it turned out that the public had grown fond of him. And for a little PR stunt, they invited Samurai Flamenco along to a drug sting, obviously only allowing him in once it was safe inside.

Let’s just say it didn’t quite go as planned…
