2014! It’s been quite the year for me, pretty much entirely because I graduated university. I’m like, an adult or something now, it’s horrifying, but it hasn’t stopped me watched my foreign children’s cartoons!

And it’s not been a bad year for anime. Masaaki Yuasa and Shinichiro Watanabe directing TV series, the start of the most popular part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Mushishi returning after 9 years without the slightest dip in quality, there’s been some pretty notable stuff going on. I can’t say there were any major surprises or new franchises that I feel are going to stand out as classics beyond Kill la Kill and Space Dandy, and the latter is chiefly because of how hard it was pushed on western audiences (not a knock on its quality, of course), but there were still a good clutch of series and films that I enjoyed greatly.

Before I indulge in a stunning display of originality and discuss my top 10 anime of the year, a quick reminder: a series counts as being from 2014 if it ended this year, even if it’s a long runner. Split cours – a single series that has seasonal gaps between chunks of the series – count as whatever year the last cours ended in (hence the exclusion of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, because it technically hasn’t finished yet). Neither of these are strict, but it’s a good enough guide. The edge cases don’t matter because they were never going to be on the list.

With that out of the way, here’s my top 10 anime of 2014!

Happy new year!

I was going to start this review by saying “I’m a big fan of hard sci-fi anime” but then I realised that the only thing I’ve seen that fits that description is Planetes, so I’m going to have to go with something different.

I’m a big fan of Planetes, mostly because of how accurately it depicted space flight while maintaining a cast of interesting, memorable and well-developed characters. I’ve been wanting more in that vein for a while, but there just hasn’t been anything quite like it before or since. At least not until about 2 years ago, when Space Brothers (or Uchuu Kyoudai if you’d prefer) started airing. It promised something quite different from Planetes, but by all accounts the premise indicated that it would have that same grounded, character-focused narrative with a lot of accurate and detailed depictions of spaceflight thrown into the mix, which was more than enough to catch my attention.

This premise is that Mutta, a professional automobile engineer, has been fired and basically hit rock bottom, while his younger brother Hibito has been training to become an astronaut with NASA – a shared dream that only one of them had been able to realise. Mutta had all but given up on ever accomplishing this, but through sheer chance JAXA started accepting applications for prospective astronauts – giving Mutta another shot at his dream. Space Brothers follows both his and Hibito’s journey at accomplishing the longstanding goal of theirs to stand on the moon together.

It’s the end of the year, and so it feels appropriate to end this blog series. It just became a chore to do this each week, and considering this blog is a hobby for me there’s no real incentive for me to continue. At least, this weekly recap series. There’ll still be posts, and I’m planning on switching to a more analytical/essay style, maybe fortnightly? We’ll see. Either way, this is on indefinite hiatus.

And it is a small post this week because 1.  A bunch of series finished last week, 2. A bunch of series are taking a one or two week break over the new year, and 3. Many fansubbers are taking time off for holidays (or are just being slow) so I haven’t seen a bunch of episodes.

Fuck yeah, it's over!

So this should have been done a day or two ago but whatever, I was busy. Everything’s coming to an end though, and the next season ain’t that promising. A shame, I guess. Oh, and a bunch of subs were delayed.

Merry JoJomas!

Maybe it’s because it’s nearing the end of the season, maybe it’s because I have lots of course work to do, or maybe it’s because each week I don’t really have anything useful or interesting to say, but these posts are beginning to get pretty tedious to write. I’ll see it through until the end of the season, but who knows what after then, really.

Loveliness and hugs abound this week
